We are thankful to all individuals that provided sustained support to the “Projeto Mantis” team (JFH, LML and SC) during different stages of this study, especially our art director Lvcas Fiat. Paulo Ormindo accurately executed the scientific illustration of the new species (Fig. 8), whereas Eduardo Oyague (Centro de Ornitología y Biodiversidad, Lima, Peru) kindly prepared the distributional map (Fig. 9). Catia Mello Patiu and Pedro Dias facilitated the loan of Vates specimens deposited at the Museu Nacional, Rio de Janeiro, right on time before the massive fire that destroyed the entire Mantodea collection along with the rest of the Museu Nacional’s historical holdings in 2018. Special thanks go to Instituto de Pesquisas Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro for facilitating the work of JFH, LML and SC within their facilities as volunteer interns, and to Reserva Ecológica de Guapiaçu and Fazenda Recanto for kindly providing infrastructure for fieldwork. This research was partially funded by the National Geographic Society through the project “The Mantis Expedition: In Search of the Atlantic Rainforest’s Praying Mantises” (Grant#WW-113ER-17).

N2 - A new species of praying mantis, Vates phoenix sp. nov. (Mantidae, Vatinae), is described from localities within Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo states, Brazil. This is the first record of Vates from the Atlantic Rainforest biome. The new species is unique among its congeners in having, among other features, strongly reduced cuticular projections above the lateral ocelli, structures otherwise well developed and produced in all other species of Vates. Remarks on the natural history and biogeography of Vates, in relation to this new finding, are further discussed.
