Introduction: In Peru, various efforts have been made to improve access to an adequate diagnosis and treatment of cerebrovascular disease. This should have an impact on the mortality and morbidity attributed to this disease. This impact may be variable among the different regions and departments of the country. Objetive: To describe the mortality due to cerebrovascular disease registered in the Ministry of Health of Peru (MINSA) between the years 2005-2015, and compare such mortality across the Peruvian regions. Materials and methods: An ecological study of secondary data analysis was carried out, evaluating the registry of deaths of the MINSA. Mortality due to cerebrovascular disease was considered when the basic cause of death was registered with an ICD-10 between I60-I69. Mortality was presented descriptively by year and department, and using geospatial analysis. Results: Between 2005-2015, 47,956 deaths due to cerebrovascular disease were recorded and 72.8% (34,892 deaths) was reported in the age group of 60 years or more. Mortality (per 100,000 population) decreased from 14.6 in the period 2005-2006 to 11.4 in 2014-2015. The departments with the highest mortality increase (per 100 000 population) in this period were Moquegua (+3.8), La Libertad (+3.1) and Lambayeque (+3.0); while those with the greatest decrease were Cusco (−11.1), Apurímac (−10.9) and Ica (−7.7). Conclusions: Mortality due to cerebrovascular disease showed a tendency to decrease in Peru, although this trend was heterogeneous among departments.
