Abstract
In this article I study the theological virtues projected by the character Ernesto, specifically faith, hope and charity with respect to the poorest, such as the pongo, the insane Marcelina and the chicheras in the novel Los ríos profundos (1958) by José María Arguedas. I study these virtues taking into account the Liberation Theology, by Gustavo Gutiérrez, as a benchmark. In this sense, I explore the intuition and projections of Arguedas regarding the praxis of a Catholic Chris-tian, resorting to reflections by Manuel Marzal, Enrique Dussel, Josef Ester-mann, and Vicente Hondarza, among others.
